The Ding & Dang Canyon loop hike is located in the San Rafael Swell near Goblin Valley. Some guidebooks refer to the canyons as 1st and 2nd Canyon. The hike travels through two slot canyons and is a fun romp for experienced hikers. Farnsworth Canyon is located in the San Rafael Swell, and offers a little something for everyone. It is also very close to both the North Fork of Iron Wash, and Lower Eardley Canyon, and makes a great combo day with either. Downclimb or Rappel - Music Canyon - San Rafael Swell Named for an acoustical echo chamber near its end, Music canyon is a charmer. The route is fairly long, mostly being a hike, but the canyon itself is spectacular. The challenges offer a group many opportunities to practice partner assists and downclimbs. You can hike the narrowest (and most fun) section of Little Wild Horse as a fast out-and-back hike, or do this as a loop, adding on a second slot canyon named Bell Canyon. In December 2020 we headed to the San Rafael Swell for some light canyoneering in Utah. This area has a reputation for wide plains that suddenly crash into a wall of stunning canyons along a mostly Southern wall. SEE LOCATIONS ON THE MAP Devils Canyon is a beautiful slot in a remote section of the San Rafael Swell. Access is relatively easy. The area is popular with ATV riders but few hike here and so it is easy to find solitude.

Among the exceptionally beautiful slot canyon hikes in the southern San Rafael area, Little Wild Horse Canyon is a classic, as well as the perfect introduction both to non-technical canyoneering for just about anyone in decent shape. The nearby Ding and Dang Canyons are a bit more difficult, and best suited for experienced hikers. The San Rafael Swell is a world of jagged cliff faces, narrow slot canyons, and hidden valleys littered with domes and towers. Its landscape is an encyclopedia of earth history, displaying diverse exposed rock formations and erosional forms. It is a popular destination for hikers, climbers, and river runners.

Bell Canyon, San Rafael Swell, Utah Bell Canyon is a short ravine that joins Little Wild Horse Canyon; it is just 1.5 miles long and is narrow, albeit rather shallow, for most of its length, and has a great variety of rock forms, textures and colors, unlike most slot canyons that pass through a single homogenous layer.
